Easier Transition from Afterschool to Summer Meals

Published on Jan 22, 2014 in Child Nutrition, School-Aged Children

1.22.14 USDA recently extended administrative flexibility and simplifications to encourage CACFP At-Risk Afterschool Meal sponsors to serve Summer Meals during the school break.

Recognizing that organizations that serve afterschool meals are well-positioned to offer summer meals, USDA has simplified the administrative process to encourage sponsors to participate in both programs to establish a year-round presence in the communities in which they serve. Although CACFP at-risk afterschool meals may not be served during the summer months, these organizations may be eligible to serve summer meals through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) or the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) under the National School Lunch Program.

USDA’s Policy Memo outlines the details of these flexibilities. link

A California Department of Education Management Bulletin will be forthcoming. If you have any questions regarding this option, please contact your agency’s School Nutrition Program (SNP), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), or Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) Specialist in the CNIPS Download Forms section, or by phone at 916-445-0850.
