Move Over Ketchup: Pepperoni Pizza is Now a Vegetable Too

11.18.2011 Congress passed legislation early this week that will limit USDA’s ability to implement strong, science-based nutrition standards for school meals. School meal nutrition standards have not been updated in the past 15 years. This was USDA’s opportunity to strongly align the meals served to our students with the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Congress, however, sided with the interest of industry and passed language that will weaken USDA’s proposed recommendations to improve school meals.

CFPA prepared a statement outlining our objections to Congressional interference in USDA’s science-based rulemaking process.
