Streamlining At-Risk Afterschool Meals for SFAs

Published on Apr 24, 2013 in Child Nutrition, School-Aged Children

4.24.2013 CDE released a management bulletin detailing the ways they are simplifying the application for and operation of CACFP afterschool meals for School Food Authorities (SFA).  USDA requires state agencies to enter into a single agreement with SFAs operating more than one program. If a SFA adds CACFP at-risk afterschool meals, that will be done as an addition to the existing single agreement. SFAs are only required to provide a limited amount of information to CDE when applying to participate in CACFP at-risk afterschool meals. They are not required to submit a budget or a management plan since CDE considers the successful operation of NSLP sufficient proof. Trained food service staff will not be required to attend any training specific to CACFP, although administrative staff must be trained if necessary on reporting requirements.

SFAs have the option to use the new NSLP meal pattern or the CACFP meal pattern. SFAs also have the option to use Offer Versus Serve with either meal pattern. CFPA and CDE encourage SFAs to take necessary steps to ensure that foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, are served in an appealing way so that students get the most out of this important meal.
