SB 1002 (De Leon) Vetoed by the Governor

Published on Oct 1, 2014 in CalFresh, State Legislation

10.1.2014 On September, 29 Governor Brown vetoed SB 1002 (De Leon) Aligning Opportunities for Health. SB 1002 would have strengthened alignment between CalFresh and Medi-Cal by requiring that the state seek the necessary federal permissions to use existing eligibility information for CalFresh or Medi-Cal enrollment. Doing so would increase the likelihood that individuals and families receive both the health and nutrition benefits for which they are eligible.

Unfortunately, SB 1002 will not be enacted. However, the Governor’s veto does not discount the need to pursue all opportunities to streamline dual enrollment between CalFresh and Medi-Cal. We will continue to pursue these goals and will encourage the administration to take the necessary steps to make these program options available for CalFresh and Medi-Cal eligible Californians.

We appreciate the work of our partners in supporting SB 1002. SB 1002 received great support throughout the legislative session from a diverse group of stakeholders and would not have made it to the Governor’s desk otherwise. We will continue working together to improve access to CalFresh!
