Act Now for Hunger-Free Schools! SB 138 onto Governor!
09.18.2017 Your letters, calls & emails in support of hunger-free schools are working! We need you more than ever- this is the final stretch! SB 138 (McGuire) needs to clear one last hurdle to become law. The bill passed the Assembly and Senate Floors this week with bipartisan, unanimous votes. Now Governor Brown has 30 days to sign or veto the bill.
SB 138 would seamlessly enroll more than 650,000 students into school meals through Medi-Cal Direct Certification, which will ensure high-poverty schools make breakfast and lunch available free of charge to all students through federal universal meal provisions.
Many of you saw the great news that New York City expanded universally free school meals to all students. That success was due to the use of Medicaid direct certification and the Community Eligibility Provision- and the strong advocacy of community voices. SB 138 would make that success possible in California districts as well! link
The Governor must sign or veto SB 138 by October 15th. We don't know exactly when the Governor will be considering the bill, so the sooner you voice your support the better! Tell your coworkers, friends, family, and everyone else you know to take action today. It's easy!
