AB 1594 (Eng) Improving Charter School
Nutrition On Wednesday, August 22, AB 1594 passed the
Senate floor with a vote of 22-13. The amended bill then returned to the Assembly on
Tuesday, August 28 for concurrence on amendments taken in the Senate and passed
with a vote of 51-29. AB 1594 is now headed to the Governor. He must sign or
veto legislation by September 30.
AB 1594 would extend the needy-student meal
requirement to California charter schools ensuring that all low-income public
school students have access to affordable meals.

AB 1872 (Alejo) Improving Child Care
Nutrition
On Tuesday, August 28, AB 1872 passed the Senate
floor with a vote of 23-13. The amended
bill then returned to the Assembly for concurrence and passed with a 46-25 vote.
The Governor now has the bill and he must sign or veto it by September 30!
AB 1872 sets the same minimum nutrition standard
for foods served in licensed family day care homes as is currently required in
all licensed child care centers and requires licensing authorities to inform all
child care providers about the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), a
federal nutrition program that offers providers financial reimbursements and
technical assistance to help them serve healthier food.

Governor will be considering AB 1594 and AB 1872 the sooner you voice your

Updated USDA Guidance to Avoid Overt
Identification
Last week USDA released their updated "Eligibility
Manual for School Meals", which includes added guidance to ensure that schools
do not overtly identify students eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Per
the manual, USDA states that "schools must ensure to the maximum extent
practicable, that the sale of competitive foods and the method of payment does
not inadvertently result in children being identified by their peers as
receiving free or reduced-price meal benefits"
