CFPA Legislative Update: AB 1594 and AB
1872 Pass Senate Appropriations Committee
AB 1594 (Eng) Improving Charter School Nutrition AB
1594 was taken off suspense and passed the Senate Appropriations Committee on
Thursday, August 16. AB 1594 would extend the needy student meal mandate to
California charter schools, ensuring that all low-income students have access to
these essential benefits.
Amendments were taken in an effort to alleviate costs. The bill as passed
no longer codifies a hardship waiver process specifically related to charter
school meal requirement. With this change charter schools will still be able to
apply for a waiver of the requirement under existing waiver processes, therefore
avoiding redundancy in code.
Take Action! AB 1594 needs
your continued support to move off the Senate Floor and on to the Governor’s
desk. We’ve prepared an AB 1594 Floor Alert. Please email or fax a copy to your
Senator.

AB 1872 (Alejo) Improving Child Care Nutrition
AB 1872 passed out of the Senate Committee on Appropriations! AB 1872 sets the same minimum nutrition
standard for foods served in licensed family day care homes as is currently
required in all licensed child care centers and requires licensing authorities
to inform all child care providers about the Child and Adult Care Food Program
(CACFP). AB 1872 ensures that children experience the benefits of healthy meals
and snacks and supports child care providers' financial stability.
